_____________________________________________________________________ CAN WE IMPROVE OUR MEMORY?By Traci Thys Do you walk into a room and wonder why you are there? Have trouble finding your keys or eye glasses? Keeping "FIT" once applied only to the body, is now known to be equally important to the brain. Our senses are incredibly important to cognitive function, including memory. Memory is a collection of things we sensed: what we saw, heard, felt, tasted and smelled, at a particular time. As a keyboard is used to input into a computer, our senses are our input into the brain. Over the past 20 years, scientific evidence has been mounting that our brains are not "hard wired" early in life. The scientific community is nearly unanimous that the brain can revise itself, physically and functionally, throughout life. Posit Science has developed 2 computer based programs scientifically designed to improve brain fitness. - Brain Fitness Program - exercises in auditory processing. (How we hear)
- Insight Program - exercises on visual processing. (How we see)
Both programs take about 40 hours to complete. No computer experience is necessary. Classes are offered through Escondido Adult School. New classes will begin in April, 2010. Look for the catalogue in the mail or www.escondidoadultschool-rop.org For more information on the programs: www.PositScience.com _____________________________________________________________________ KNOW YOUR NUMBERS? If you don't know your blood pressure, you should have it checked. The Living Well Ministry offers monthly blood pressure checks at the back of the church auditorium the first Sunday of each month between services. High blood pressure (HBP) affects your risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure and kidney disease. It's sometimes called "the silent killer" because HBP has no symptoms, so you may not be aware that it's damaging your arteries, heart and other organs. Myth: You don't need to have your blood pressure checked until you reach middle age. Fact: It's a good idea to start having your blood pressure checked at an early age - even children as young as 6 can have high blood pressure. NextGen should certainly have their pressure checked. According to research, teenagers with the highest blood pressure and extra pounds have thicker arteries by age 30. Preventing fatty buildups in artery walls may depend on keeping boys and girls from becoming overweight as adolescents, or helping them lose excess weight if they're already obese. It's that lasting feeling of fullness at a meal's end, the feeling that you're no longer hungry or deprived. The idea is to fill up on foods that give you a lot of volume for relatively few calories. For example, 1/4 cup of raisins and 1 2/3 cups of grapes have the same number of calories, but with the grapes, you get to eat much more, and you are apt to feel more satisfied. Other satisfying high-volume foods include complex carbohydrates like beans or brown rice. Low-fat popcorn can also fill you up. Lean protein-rich foods can also contribute to satisfy so include chicken breast, tuna, or low-fat yogurt in your meals.
